The Martin Robison Delany

Monument Fund

The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center has established a fund for an appropriate monument to place in Massies Creek cemetery in honor of Martin R. Delany.  Although he was a Renaissance man and one of the leading American figures of the 19th Century, his gravesite is marked with a small, government-issued marker with his name misspelled.  The Delany family plot is the resting place of Martin Delany, his wife Catherine, and three of his children, who have no markers.  Two spaces remain and it is there that the monument will be placed.  The original marker, which has been partially obscured, will be preserved because of its great historic significance.  The new monument will both honor Delany and educate and inspire all who visit the gravesite.  It will be made of Black African granite to reflect Delany’s pride in his ancestral homeland, and it will feature an engraving of Delany as a Major in the Civil War.  Bronze plaques will provide a summary of his remarkable life and career, in addition to the names of the family members buried there.

You are encouraged to participate in this endeavor by sending your contribution to the NAAMCC, PO Box 578, Wilberforce, OH 45384-0578.  Please note “Martin Delany Monument Fund.”  The Fund resides in a fully qualified 501-©-3 organization and gifts are tax deductible.
