EUGENE CORTEZ STALLWORTH

April 23, 1920 - July 17, 2002


Born on April 23, 1920, Eugene Cortez Stallworth was the only child of Eula Lee Stallworth (later Cunningham) and Lewis Isaac Stallworth of Beatrice, Alabama. At the age of eight, he moved with his mother to Brewton, Alabama where he received his formal education and recognized his special talent in art. As a high school student at Southern Normal School, he began to paint the first of many signs that would become his mark in Brewton and the surrounding area. He attended Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and received a BS Degree in Art and Education and earned a Master's Degree in Education from Alabama State College in Montgomery.

Eugene Stallworth led an exemplary life in his dedication to his family, his students and to the community. He taught at the Oak Grove School where he also coached the basketball team. He later taught at Southern Normal School and ended his teaching career retiring his position as principal at the W. S. Neal Middle School.

He was a member of the Brewton City Council and acted as Mayor Pro Tempore for the City of Brewton. He was Art Director for Escambia County and a member of the NAACP. He was active on many committees and received numerous awards over his lifetime.

Mr. Stallworth was a founding member of the Bergen Memorial Church in Brewton and became a member of the Payne Memorial A.M.E. Church after relocating to New Orleans, Louisiana.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lyston Faddis Stallworth and leaves to cherish his memory, a brother Earvin Stallworth (Letisha Stallworth) of Mobile, Alabama; two daughters, Saundra S. Adams (Walter Adams) of New Orleans, Louisiana and Brenda S. Devrouax (Paul Devrouax) of Washington, DC; three grandchildren, Tamara A. Torrence (Gregory Torrence) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Walter Eugene Adams of Silver Spring, Maryland and Lesley Stallworth Devrouax of Los Angeles, California and two great-grandchildren, Kayla Noelle Torrence and Kyle Maxwell Torrence.
