-THE SOUL OF A MAN- |
2003 |
COMMISSIONER GEORGE DAILEY, son of the late Frank and Ophelia Dailey, was born on March 19, 1928. He attended the Ebenezer Lutheran School, where he joined the Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Atmore, Alabama. His junior and senior high school education was completed at the Escambia County Training School in Atmore, Alabama.
From the union of Frank and Ophelia Dailey, three sons and four daughters were born. Henry and Minnie (twins), Mattie, Helen, George, Walter Lee, and Gwendolyn. George was blessed with many nieces and nephews.
"The Soul Of A Man" mirrored through his deeds, he began his quest for learning after completing high school. He enlisted in the United States Army where he served for three years. He completed his professional training at Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama, where he received Bachelors and Masters degrees.
"The Soul Of A Man" reaches out to touch others. He taught in the Shelby County School System, and later became principal of Prentice High School in Montevallo, Alabama. Five years later, he became Assistant Principal at the newly integrated Montevallo High School.
He accepted a position with the Shelby County Board of Education in Columbiana, Alabama as Coordinator of Secondary Education. He remained in that position until he retired after 38 years in education.
George Dailey was a strong educator and a very important political leader. He enjoyed the challenge of working with people. He served on the Montevallo City Council for six years prior to becoming a member of the Shelby County Commission. While on the commission, he served as Chairman from November 1993--November 1994.
George linked his life to organizations that were centered around learning and achievement. Among Commissioner Dailey's accomplishments are: Founder of the Shelby County Democratic Conference; First African-American to hold seats on Montevallo's City Council and the Shelby County Commission; initiated the hiring of other African-Americans in key county positions in Shelby County; Recipient of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Political Freedom Award; Recipient of the Shelby County Democratic Conference Martin Luther King, Jr. Achievement Award; Honorary Staff of the Attorney General; Honorary Treasurer for the State of Alabama; Member of the Birmingham News Advisory Board; Appointed by the Governor to serve on the Historical Iron Works Board; Board of Directors for the 11th Area Action Committee, Vision 2000, Compac 100, and Challenging Black Youth Advisory Council.
He was married to Jewel W. Dailey for 43 years. From this union in marriage, two daughters were born: Jennifer Elaine (Prince Colley), and Deborah Ann (Randy Palmer). George was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren: Jasmine Petrice, Pamella Elise, Brandon Prince, Derrick Randall and Jason Alexander. Without a doubt, George loved his family, and throughout his life went deep into his soul to insure their happiness and well-being. His family will retain the memory of this soul as one who motivated learning and achievement.
The world will surely miss this loved, compassionate and giving soul. Heavenly chagrined by George's illness and deeply impressed by the work he had done for his county and community, family and friends will know that this soul stood tall in more ways than one.
"Some people pass
through our lives like never ending streams----
Others stop and touch our hearts with a warmth that never leaves."
THIS WAS THE SOUL OF GEORGE DAILEY.
