MOUNT GILEAD BAPTIST CHURCH

Mount Gilead Baptist Church of Brackettville, closed for many years now, of historical valve to the Seminole Indian Scouts, has recently been condemned by the city of Brackettville. They were not wrong in their doing because the church has become a hazard to any surrounding structure and any inquisitive child. The members of Mt. Gilead will hope to hold their first meeting on May 4, 2002, along with the Seminole Association, to discuss possibilities for or the future of the badly ruined structure.

Due to recent discussions with lawyers, it is a known fact that only members of the church can decide the future of the structure. We appreciate the City of Brackettville allowing us time to do just that. The only known baptized members that are still living are:

Clarence G. Ward--Brackettville

Luther W. Ward--Carrizo Springs

Douglas C. Ward--Brackettville

Beverly A. Wright--Brackettville

Georgie M. Shields--Brackettville

Cerilla Stewart--Brackettville

One of the discussions in the past was that the members set up regular meetings once again to decide the future of the church. The most likely future of the church would be to will it over to the Seminole Indian Scout Cemetery Association of Brackettville.

The land for Mt. Gilead Church was purchased September 12, 1917 from Annie Fritter. The church evidently at that time was called Mt. Garelean First Baptist Negro Church or a mistake was made on the deed. Because it appears that about November 22, 1919 the name on the deed was changed to the Members of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Trustees of the church at that time were Joe Remo and Charles Daniels.
